South Bend Model A |
This is my South bend Model A lathe page. I have rebuilt this lathe from various
parts obtained off Ebay and some other sources off the net. As I made this web page, I am still in the process of rebuilding and
improving this vintage machine. When I first started, I was using a 3' bed that
was from a model C and it did not have the extra mounting hole in the bed for
mounting the QC gear box. I held off on drilling out for the hole thinking I may
end up with another bed from a model A. |
I was right, I found a nice bed from Ebay that is 3 1/2' length. Now after all the
work of building the 3' lathe, I took all the Model A parts from it and
mounted to the 3 1/2' bed. I had also picked up another tailstock, headstock,
carriage, apron and compound for a model A. Now I have a complete Model A and in
addition, I now have everything available to build a Model B lathe. The difference
between a Model A,B and C is, the A has QC gear box with Power crossfeed,
the B has power crossfeed but manual change gears, the C has no power crossfeed
and the only longitude feed is driven by the leadscrew instead of special gearing
in the apron. Below are pix of the lathe and some of the progress of the rebuild, I will be adding
more as time goes. right now there will be enough to get an idea of the machine. |
Lathe in original condition when I first received it it was a Model C |
This is the A when first built on the C bed |
This page is still under construction, some of my pix did not come out and could
not be loaded, so I will have to take more and load them later |
